Getting to and from John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) is simple thanks to a full menu of ground transportation: Uber and Lyft, taxis, COTA public buses, rental cars, hotel shuttles, and prearranged limos. The airport sits about 6 miles east of downtown Columbus (roughly a 10–15 minute drive via I-670), and nearly everything leaves from the ground transportation area on the arrivals (lower) level, just outside baggage claim.

Uber and Lyft at CMH
Uber and Lyft are both approved to operate at CMH. After landing, follow the signs to baggage claim and head outside to the designated ground transportation area — cross over the arrivals drive from outside baggage claim and look for the marked TNC/rideshare pickup zone. Request your ride only after you have your bags, and message the driver your door number to speed up the meetup.
For drop-offs, rideshares use the departures (upper level) curbside, just like private cars — tell your driver your airline and they’ll stop at the right doors. Rides to downtown Columbus are typically reported in the $15–$25 range depending on traffic and surge pricing (verify in the app before booking). For a step-by-step on meeting your driver, see our CMH pick-up and drop-off guide.
Taxis
Taxis queue on the arrivals level outside baggage claim in the ground transportation area — no app or reservation needed. Fares to downtown Columbus run around $29 depending on your exact destination. If anything goes wrong with a taxi trip, the airport’s taxi management team can be reached at 614-239-8294.
COTA Public Transportation
The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is the budget pick for getting between CMH and the city:
- COTA AirConnect (suspended) — COTA’s former direct airport–downtown service (luggage racks, USB charging ports; historically about every 30 minutes, roughly 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM, around $2.75 one-way). COTA’s July 2026 transit plan treats AirConnect as a suspended service, with a replacement airport route (Line 99) planned for 2028 — the airport’s own page may still show the old schedule. For now, use COTA Route 7 or rideshare, and confirm current options on cota.com before relying on transit for an early or late flight.
- COTA Route 7 — local buses stop at the airport (International Gateway/Sawyer Road and outside baggage claim), running about every 30 minutes on weekdays and hourly on weekends, connecting through east Columbus toward downtown.
There’s no train or subway service to CMH — bus is the only public transit option. If you’re staying downtown without a car, COTA Route 7 is the cheapest way in while AirConnect remains suspended.

Rental Cars at Columbus Airport
Nine rental companies (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Thrifty) operate from the CMH Rental Car Center, reached by shuttle from the ground transportation area outside baggage claim. The center is listed as open 6:00 AM–12:30 AM daily. A rental makes sense if you’re exploring beyond Columbus; for a downtown-only stay, compare the total against a few rideshares first. Full details are in our CMH rental car guide.
Hotel Shuttles and Other Transportation
- Hotel shuttles — many airport-area hotels (Fairfield Inn, Hampton Inn, Residence Inn, and others right on International Gateway) run complimentary airport shuttles. Confirm the schedule and pickup point with your hotel when you book.
- Limousines and charter buses — prearranged services pick up outside the baggage claim area; the airport publishes a list of recommended providers on flycolumbus.com.
- Private off-site parking shuttles — lots like The Parking Spot run their own shuttles to the terminal, typically with slightly lower daily rates than on-airport lots (around $7.50+/day when booked ahead).
Which Option Should You Choose?
- Cheapest: COTA Route 7 (AirConnect, ~$2.75, is currently suspended).
- Fastest door-to-door: Uber/Lyft or taxi, 10–15 minutes to downtown.
- Exploring Ohio: rental car from the Rental Car Center.
- Staying at an airport hotel: the free hotel shuttle — ask at booking.
- Getting picked up by family: have them wait in a free cell phone lot and meet you at the arrivals curb.

Make Your CMH Journey Easier with AirportGo
AirportGo is built for the whole airport journey — before, during, and after your flight. Before you fly, use the packing checklist and trip tasks to get organized. During your trip, search the directory for gates, food, restrooms, and ATMs, get step-by-step walking navigation through the terminal, check TSA checkpoint times, and set a parking reminder so your spot is saved. After you land, the find-my-car feature uses your saved parking photo and location to walk you back to your vehicle. It even works offline, so a weak airport signal won’t slow you down. The app is available now on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
