Collecting your checked luggage at John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) happens on the lower (arrivals) level of the terminal — the same level as ground transportation, so you can roll straight from the carousel to your taxi, rideshare, or shuttle. Here’s where to go, what’s on the baggage claim level, and what to do if your bag doesn’t show up.

Where Is Baggage Claim at CMH?

Baggage claim occupies the terminal’s lower level (Level 1). After deplaning into Concourse A, B, or C, follow the overhead signs toward the terminal and take the escalators or elevators down one level. Flight information screens above the carousels show which carousel serves each arriving flight — match your flight number, not just your airline, since carousel assignments change throughout the day.

If you need help, there’s a staffed information desk on the baggage claim level near the escalator (a second desk sits near the ticketing desks upstairs). Airport customer service can also be reached at 614-239-4000.

What’s on the Baggage Claim Level

The arrivals level packs in more than carousels. Useful stops while you wait for your bags:

  • ATMs near the escalators.
  • Nursing room near baggage carousel 1 (additional nursing rooms are past security near gates A2, B32, and C52).
  • Interfaith meditation room near baggage carousel 6.
  • Pet relief area at the south end of the terminal, just outside baggage claim.
  • Ground transportation directly outside the building — taxis, the Uber/Lyft pickup zone, the rental car shuttle, and COTA bus stops. See our CMH transportation guide for every option.

How Long Does Baggage Claim Take?

Bags generally start arriving on the carousel within 15–25 minutes of gate arrival, though the first bags off can beat that and the last ones lag — wide-body and full flights take longer to unload. If you’re being picked up, have your driver wait in a free cell phone lot and call them only once you actually have your bag in hand; that avoids a second loop around the terminal.

What If Your Luggage Is Missing or Damaged?

Don’t leave the airport before reporting it — that’s the single most important rule:

  • Report to your airline’s baggage service office first. It’s typically located on the baggage claim level. File a claim before you exit; you’ll get a reference number to track the bag.
  • Describe the bag precisely — color, size, brand, and anything distinctive. A photo of your luggage (take one at packing time) speeds up identification enormously.
  • Ask about delivery. Most airlines will deliver a delayed bag to your home or hotel once it’s located, usually within 24 hours on domestic itineraries.
  • Keep receipts for essentials you buy while waiting — many airlines reimburse reasonable interim expenses.
  • Lost something that isn’t airline luggage? Items left elsewhere in the terminal go to CMH’s lost and found, open Monday–Friday 10:00 AM–6:00 PM, which stores items for up to 90 days. Anything lost on the aircraft itself should be reported to your airline directly.

Tips for a Faster Baggage Claim Experience

  • Fly carry-on only when you can. At a compact airport like CMH, skipping the carousel entirely is the fastest exit — deplane to curb in minutes.
  • Stand near the carousel mouth where bags first emerge; you’ll spot yours earlier and avoid the crowd at the far end.
  • Make your bag unmistakable. A bright strap, sticker, or colorful tag beats squinting at ten identical black suitcases.
  • Photograph your bag and its contents before checking it — invaluable if you ever need to file a claim.
  • Know your onward ride in advance. Decide before landing whether you need a rental car, rideshare, taxi, or a pickup at the curb, so you head straight there from the carousel.

Make Your CMH Journey Easier with AirportGo

AirportGo is built for the whole airport journey — before, during, and after your flight. Before you fly, use the packing checklist and trip tasks to get organized. During your trip, search the directory for gates, food, restrooms, and ATMs, get step-by-step walking navigation through the terminal, check TSA checkpoint times, and set a parking reminder so your spot is saved. After you land, the find-my-car feature uses your saved parking photo and location to walk you back to your vehicle. It even works offline, so a weak airport signal won’t slow you down. The app is available now on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
