The short answer for John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH): the airport itself asks you to be inside the terminal at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2 hours before an international flight. That is the official guidance from flycolumbus.com, issued with terminal construction underway. Here is what that buffer actually covers, when to add more, and when you can safely trim it.

The Airport’s Official Guidance

Fly Columbus’s “prepare for your flight” guidance is explicit: with airport construction underway, allow extra time to arrive and park so you can enter the terminal at least 90 minutes before domestic flights and 2 hours before international flights. Note the wording — that is 90 minutes inside the terminal, not 90 minutes pulling into the parking lot.

Many airlines separately recommend 2 hours for domestic flights. Reconcile the two this way: 90 minutes is the minimum the airport asks for; 2 hours is the comfortable version most airlines suggest. If you are checking bags, traveling with kids, or flying at a peak time, take the 2 hours.

Where the Time Goes: A Minute-by-Minute Breakdown

A realistic budget for a domestic departure from CMH:

  • Parking and getting to the terminal: 10–20 minutes. Garage parking is steps away; economy lots add a shuttle ride. Construction can add time — the airport says so explicitly.
  • Ticketing and bag drop: 5–20 minutes. Near zero if you checked in on the app with no bags to drop; a real line if you need the counter at a peak hour.
  • Security screening: 10–30 minutes. CMH is a mid-size airport with three checkpoints (A, B, C — one per concourse), and lines are usually modest outside the early-morning bank. But you cannot use a different concourse’s checkpoint to dodge a line, so the wait at your checkpoint is the wait.
  • Walking to your gate: 5–15 minutes. CMH’s concourses are compact — most gates are minutes from the checkpoint — but a far gate plus a restroom stop adds up.
  • Buffer: 15–20 minutes. For the gate change, the long shuttle ride from the economy lot, the coffee line. The buffer is the whole point.

Add it up and 90 minutes covers a normal trip with margin; 2 hours covers a normal trip with checked bags or a morning departure.

Arrive Earlier When…

  • You are flying on a holiday, a school-break week, or the Sunday after one — every step takes longer.
  • Your flight departs in the early-morning bank (roughly 5–7 a.m.), the busiest screening window at CMH.
  • You are checking bags and cannot use the app-only flow.
  • You are traveling with small children, need wheelchair assistance, or are requesting any special service — build in time to arrange it.
  • You are flying internationally (Toronto, seasonal leisure destinations): take the full 2 hours.
  • It is an Ohio State home football weekend or another big Columbus event — flights run fuller than usual.

You Can Trim Time When…

  • You have only a carry-on, checked in on the app, and have your boarding pass on your phone — you can walk straight from the curb to security.
  • You have TSA PreCheck or CLEAR+ (both operate at all three CMH checkpoints), which shortens the screening step.
  • You are flying midday or late evening, outside the morning bank.
  • You parked in the garage, steps from the terminal, instead of an economy lot.

Even when everything lines up, keep at least 60 minutes inside the terminal. CMH’s three-checkpoint layout means a wrong turn costs more here than at a single-checkpoint airport: clear the wrong checkpoint and you exit, walk landside, and re-clear at the right one.

Don’t Forget Parking and the Shuttle

The most underestimated chunk of “arrival time” is the part before you enter the building. Garage parking is adjacent to the terminal; the economy lots require a shuttle ride that can add 15+ minutes each way at busy times. If someone is dropping you off, the departures curb on the upper level is the move — and if someone is picking you up, have them wait in the cell phone lot rather than circling. Mornings vs. Evenings at CMH

Mornings carry the airport’s heaviest departure banks and the longest security lines — this is when the 2-hour guidance earns its keep. Midday and evening departures are typically calmer across ticketing, screening, and the concourses. If you have a choice of flights and hate rushing, the later one buys you a meaningfully calmer airport.

One more timing consideration: if your flight is delayed, the latest TSA will remain open is 10 p.m. — but do not cut a late-evening arrival close on that basis. And if the delay stretches into hours, our CMH flight delay guide covers how to spend the wait. For the screening side of the timing question, see the CMH security guide.
