Getting from your parking spot to your gate at John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) is a five-step process: pick the right lot, get to the terminal, check in, clear the correct security checkpoint, and walk to your gate. CMH’s compact single-terminal layout keeps every step short — here’s the full route with current parking rates and timing.

Step 1: Choose the Right Parking Option
Your parking choice sets the tone for the whole trip. Current on-airport options from flycolumbus.com:
- Parking garage — short-term (Level 4): $7 first hour, up to $30/24 hrs; long-term (Levels 1–6): $7 first hour, up to $24/24 hrs. Covered walkways to the terminal; the fastest option.
- Red shuttle lot (3795 International Gateway) — $11/24 hrs. Free shuttles run 24/7, every 15–18 minutes.
- Green shuttle lot (3256 E 17th Ave.) — $9/24 hrs, first hour free. Cheapest on-airport rate.
Short on time or traveling with heavy bags? Take the garage. Leaving the car for several days? The Red or Green Lot saves real money. Full rate details and a cost comparison are in our CMH parking guide and economy vs. garage breakdown.
Step 2: Getting from the Garage to the Terminal
From the parking garage, follow the pedestrian signs through the covered walkways directly into the terminal — you’ll reach the check-in area in about five minutes without waiting for any shuttle. You’ll arrive on the upper (departures) level, where you’ll find airline check-in counters, self-service kiosks, flight information displays, and the entrances to all three concourses.
Step 3: Taking the Shuttle from the Red or Green Lot
From the Red or Green Lot, board the complimentary airport shuttle at the marked pickup signs after parking. Shuttles run 24 hours a day and depart the terminal every 15–18 minutes, dropping you at the terminal entrance. Build in 20–30 extra minutes each way for the ride plus waiting time — more late at night. Before you board, photograph your parking spot and note your lot, row, and section; the lots are large and look identical at midnight after a long flight.

Step 4: Check In and Clear the Right Security Checkpoint
Check in at your airline’s counter or kiosk in the central ticketing area, then head to your concourse’s own TSA checkpoint — this is the step travelers get wrong. Each concourse (A, B, C) has a separate checkpoint, and the concourses are not connected past security: enter the wrong one and you’ll have to exit and reclear. The checkpoints are reported open 4:00 AM–8:30 PM, with TSA PreCheck and CLEAR lanes at all three. Have your boarding pass and ID ready.
Know your concourse before you walk over (confirm on your boarding pass and the departure boards, since assignments can shift): Concourse A is generally Southwest; Concourse B is generally American and United; Concourse C is generally Air Canada, Alaska, Breeze, Delta, Frontier, Sun Country, and Viva.
Step 5: Walk to Your Gate
After security, follow the overhead directional signs to your gate and re-check the flight information screens for last-minute gate changes. The walks are short: roughly 1–3 minutes in Concourses A and B, 2–5 minutes in Concourse C. Along the way you’ll pass restaurants, coffee shops, restrooms, charging stations, and seating areas if you have time before boarding.
Timing: How Early Should You Arrive?
- Parked in the garage: arrive 2 hours before a domestic flight — the walk to check-in takes about five minutes.
- Parked in the Red or Green Lot: arrive 2 hours plus 20–30 minutes of shuttle buffer.
- Checking bags or traveling at peak holiday times: add another 15–30 minutes for the ticket counter and security lines.
Tips for a Faster Parking-to-Gate Trip
- Save your parking location before leaving the car — photo plus a lot/row note.
- Travel with your boarding pass ready (mobile or printed) to skip the kiosk line.
- Enter the correct concourse checkpoint the first time — the single biggest time-saver at CMH.
- Re-check your gate after security — assignments can change, particularly during irregular operations.
- Prefer not to park at all? Compare Uber, Lyft, COTA buses, and other ways to reach CMH.

Make Your CMH Journey Easier with AirportGo
AirportGo is built for the whole airport journey — before, during, and after your flight. Before you fly, use the packing checklist and trip tasks to get organized. During your trip, search the directory for gates, food, restrooms, and ATMs, get step-by-step walking navigation through the terminal, check TSA checkpoint times, and set a parking reminder so your spot is saved. After you land, the find-my-car feature uses your saved parking photo and location to walk you back to your vehicle. It even works offline, so a weak airport signal won’t slow you down. The app is available now on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
