Stuck at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) between flights? CLE is a single-terminal airport with three concourses, so everything — food, shops, gates — is walkable without trains or shuttles. What you can do with a layover depends almost entirely on how much time you have. Here’s the playbook.

Traveler relaxing during a layover at Cleveland Hopkins Airport.

First: Know Exactly How Much Time You Have

Subtract 45 minutes from your layover: 30 minutes to get to your next gate and board, plus a 15-minute cushion (gate assignments at CLE can change, particularly for American and United in Concourse C). What’s left is your real layover. Under 90 minutes real time? Stay put and eat near your gate. Two to four hours? You can eat properly, shop, and explore another concourse. Four or more? Leaving the airport becomes realistic.

Eat Like You’re in Cleveland

A layover is the excuse to eat well. In Concourse C, Bar Symon — chef Michael Symon’s airport restaurant — serves the Lola Burger, pierogis, and a real breakfast menu. Great Lakes Brewing Co. near Gate C14 pours Cleveland craft beer. Cantina Taqueria & Tequila Bar does street tacos and margaritas, and Wow Bao covers fast Asian buns and bowls. Over in Concourse A, 800 Degrees Woodfired Kitchen fires craft pizzas. The main terminal food court has Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A, and Currito if you’re pre-security. Full rundown in our CLE food guide.

Shop for Actual Cleveland Souvenirs

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum Store in the main terminal is the best souvenir stop in the airport — band tees, vinyl, and music books from the Hall itself. Cleveland Shines (Concourses B and C) and Fresh Brewed Tees (Concourse C) cover locally themed gifts and apparel, and OH Game Day Sports stocks Guardians, Cavaliers, and Browns gear. More in our CLE shopping guide.

Recharge Yourself and Your Devices

CLE has free Wi-Fi throughout, and seating areas near gates generally offer power outlets — grab a seat with an outlet and top everything off. If your layover stretches into the evening, note that most kitchens and bars wind down with the last bank of departures (typically 7:00–9:00 PM), and the TSA checkpoints close on staggered schedules: South at 7:45 PM, North at 7:00 PM, Central at 10:00 PM. If you leave the secure area, make sure you can get back through — after the North and South checkpoints close, Central is your only way back in.

Take in the Terminal Art

CLE runs a rotating art-exhibit program throughout the terminal, and the RTA Airport Station itself incorporates ceramic artwork celebrating Cleveland’s aviation heritage dating back to the 1930s National Air Races. It’s not a museum visit, but a slow walk through the terminal with an eye out for the exhibits beats an hour of scrolling. Between the art, the Rock Hall store, and the concourse food options, a three-hour layover at CLE passes faster than you’d expect.

Four or more hours of real time opens up Cleveland. The RTA Red Line runs from the lower level of the terminal to downtown Tower City in under 30 minutes, roughly every 15 minutes — that puts the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the lakefront, and downtown restaurants within reach. Budget the math honestly: 30 minutes each way on the train, plus getting back through security (allow 30–45 minutes), means you need at least 4 hours to spend even 2 hours downtown. Shorter than that, stay in the terminal. Full transit details are in our CLE transportation guide, and our Concourse C map helps you find your way back to your gate fast.

Make Your CLE Journey Easier with AirportGo

AirportGo is built for the whole airport journey — before, during, and after your flight. Before you fly, use the packing checklist and trip tasks to get organized. During your trip, search the directory for gates, food, restrooms, and ATMs, get step-by-step walking navigation through the terminal, check TSA checkpoint times, and set a parking reminder so your spot is saved. After you land, the find-my-car feature uses your saved parking photo and location to walk you back to your vehicle. It even works offline, so a weak airport signal won’t slow you down. The app is available now on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
